Sometimes, the GA fandom feels like it's a playground filled with squabbling elementary children.
See, the jungle gym is Mer/Der territory. It's in the heart of the playground so they like to think the whole world revolves around them. They sit up top and think, "Look at our kingdom! Isn't it beautiful?" Often, they forget to look down and remember that while they may have the biggest area, they're not the only ones at the playground. They need to learn to share.
The Cristina/? fans hang out at the merry-go-around. There's always someone new there: Burke, old Stanford Professor Dude, Hunt, Avery. They generally bicker about who's going to hang on the longest; each has their own favourite. Really, I don't know what else to say about these guys. They seem pretty normal.
Alex/Izzie kids want to go on the teeter-totter. Badly. They really want that balance. They know they're capable, it's always just out of reach. Right now, they're all about the slide. They go down blindly headfirst through the highs and lows alone, but have confidence that their other half will be there at the bottom to catch them. That teeter-totter though? They always keep one eye on it.
The swings are dominated by the Callie/Arizona gang. There's not very many seats, so their numbers are limited, but they're still very much on the playground. These guys are pretty cool, imo. They're swinging at maximum speed and jumping off to chase that high. And that moment when they're in the air? They're flying. How sweet is that? It's awesome to be them right now. They might fumble when they land, but they seem pretty optimistic and bounce right back up. All around, life is good for them.
Us M/L kids? Well, you know how there's always one dumb enough to eat the sand? Yeah, that's us. It's an unexpected flavour, but it tastes good so hey, why not keep on eating? Everyone else makes faces and keeps their distance, yelling Thats gross! It's okay. We don't really care, because we know this works. There's the imminent stomachache though, and while some have already stopped shoving sand down their throats to avoid this discomfort, the rest of us are committed because we know it's temporary. After that, it'll go back to tasting good again. It's useful in ruling out the flakey from the dedicated.
Then, there are the ones throwing a temper tantrum along the edges of the playground, refusing to even
get in. You gotta wonder why they bother to show up at all.
Generally, most of us stay in a corner and make faces to taunt the others, laughing when they get worked up. We think we're pretty cool when we do it. Far from it, actually. It's not a perfect analogy. Hell, I'm not even sure if it's a workable one, and if you're going "Hey! That's not me/how my area of the playground is!" That's kind of the point, isn't it? When you refuse to venture out beyond what you prefer and see if there's anything else you might like, that's how all these divisions and misconceptions are created. I'm not sure why we're at the playground at all. Nobody's confined us there. Why not pick up a ball, go out on the field and play a few team sports instead? Raise school spirit and all that.
Or, maybe we all just need a time-out.
(if there's anything I've learned from all this, it's that to never spend two hours typing on a three-inch screen in a program that's going to crash when you can spend 15 minutes doing the same thing on the computer, because that's what you'll inevitably end up doing, anyway)
